Ciudad compacta y diversa [Presentación]

Abstract

En la ciudad compacta la mayoría de las actividades, residencia, trabajo y servicios, están ubicados en un área relativamente pequeña y densa. En ella las edificaciones suele ser altas y ubicadas cerca unos de los otras, lo que permite que las personas puedan acceder fácilmente a pie o en bicicleta. Generalmente tiene buena infraestructura de transporte público, lo que también potencia su accesibilidad y conectividad y fomenta un estilo de vida más activo y eficiente. Este concepto de ciudad también facilita que los residentes tengan acceso, en corta distancia, a una gran variedad de actividades, sin necesidad de utilizar vehículos motorizados lo que reditúa en áreas más sostenibles y saludables que promueven la interacción social y el concepto de comunidad. Otra característica en la ciudad compacta es la diversidad, que acoge y celebra la variedad cultural y de estilos de vida, en ella se manifiestan personas de diferentes orígenes, condiciones, visiones del mundo y aspiraciones, lo que genera profundas contradicciones socio espaciales. El escenario positivo es aquel que ofrezca espacios que fomenten la inclusión, el respeto y la igualdad de oportunidades para todos los habitantes. La ciudad diversa y compacta a la que aspiramos debe ser aquella que ofrezca una amplia gama de experiencias culturales, y sociales que la conviertan en un lugar vibrante y enriquecedor para vivir. Como señala Gleaser para que en un futuro haya más gente viviendo en ciudades compactas, densas y diversas, las más deseables de esas ciudades tendrán que reducir, de manera razonable, las barreras que limitan la mezcla de usos, la densificación y la construcción de edificios más altos, esto mediante políticas públicas, proyectos de nuevos entornos y una nueva normativa urbana orientada a tal fin.

In the compact city, most activities, residence, work and services are located in a relatively small and dense area. The diverse and compact city we aspire to must be one that offers a wide range of cultural and social experiences that make it a vibrant and enriching place to live. As Gleaser points out, in order for there to be more people living in compact, dense and diverse cities in the future, the most desirable of these cities will have to reasonably reduce the barriers that limit the mix of uses, densification and the construction of taller buildings, through public policies, new environment projects and new urban regulations aimed at this end.
