The present work describes the design and synthesis of a molecular switch which responds to external stimuli in order to perform specific tasks, i.e. acting as a molecular machine. This molecular switch is formed by 1,2,3-triazole and a-cyclodextrin moieties. The physicochemical properties of the structures determined the active behavior of the molecular switch. This synthesis allows easy access to structures capables of perform complex tasks. This molecular machine was capable of modulate the synthesis of ynones and conjugated diynes, inhibiting the synthesis of one of the species by changing the polarity of the solvent. These results indicate that, in non-polar solvents, a-cyclodextrin moves towards the pyridine portion in the pseudo-rotaxane, inhibiting the formation of the ynone and, consecuently, promoting the formation of the alkyne homocoupling product.
