Along many years of teaching engineering thermodynamics at undergraduate level we have had the chance to take advantage of the software available in the market to give our students a better education. We have found that spreadsheets are an economical tool with the capacity to perform most of the typical calculations required in a course of thermodynamics applied to chemical engineering, particularly the calculations which require iterative procedures. This kind of procedures show up frequently during the course, and they are a disadvantage for the teaching-learning process because they can consume a lot of time and the student can be bored or distracted by them. The use of spreadsheets allows to a) cope with this disadvantage, b) take benefit of the numerical methods which require iterative calculations, and c) take a deeper look at the matter of the engineering applications of thermodynamics. To exemplify this last three points we show a solution to a simple problem, and then we discuss further all the ideas addressed in this abstract.
