In this paper the characterization of the response of Non Structural Components (NSCs) in hospital buildings is presented. The nonlinear seismic behavior of three buildings located in the city of Chilpancingo, Guerrero; two of them in soft soil and one of them in rock, were studied. Dynamic Time History Analysis was conducted with synthetic seismic records, whose response spectra match to spectra that are representative of seismic hazard in the region. The Stories accelerations were obtained and response spectra (Floor Spectra) were generated for each building. This methodology allows the evaluation of the NSCs, idealizing them as single degree of freedom system. It is noted that the maximum spectral peaks of the structural response are associated with the fundamental period of the buildings studied. Further, maximum accelerations in NSCs excess, in roof level, between six and ten times the peak floor acceleration. For cities where active seismic sources are relatively near, the peaks of the structural response are associated with short periods. Concluded that for the range of periods of the NSCs studied (0.01 to 0.53 sec.), they will experience great response demands. In buildings such as hospitals, it is necessary to control the seismic response, because, although the structural system is properly performed, the NSCs could pose damage, and emergency buildings lose functionality after seismic events of great magnitude.
