There are different perspectives in the study of the phenomenon of laughter. The most influential have been those of Plato and Aristotle, who saw it as an expression of man’s rational superiority; that of laughter as social repression developed by Henri Bergson; that of laughter as liberation from Sigmon Freud’s subconscious, and finally laughter as self-assumption from Friedrich Nietzsche. The first three around the idea of laughter as expression/liberation; in contrast to the fourth, which is not pragmatic but existential. In this essay, what I propose is to problematize these positions and focus on the proposal of the Nietzschean superman and his laughter as self-assumption.
