The imine formation of the aniline was studied by a solvent-free process and compared to the conventional method which does employ solvent to carry out the synthesis. The aniline imines were obtained with benzaldehyde, p-methoxybenzaldehyde and p-nitrobenzaldehyde, both by the mechano-chemical method by mixing the reactants in a mortar and by the traditional method by heating the reactant mixture dissolved in toluene at reflux for two hours. The products were isolated and identified by infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Conventional imine synthesis required a lot of time and more resources for its execution while the mechanochemical synthesis could be carried out in less time and in the absence of solvent, so it is suggested to substitute the conventional method of imine synthesis by the mechanochemical method. The effect of the substitution on the aromatic ring of the aldehyde on the imine formation was evaluated according to the quickness of formation of the product as a function of time. It could be seen that the electron attracting nitro substituent (NO₂) accelerates the reaction rate while the electron donating methoxy substituent (CH₃O) decreases the reaction rate.
