In this article I will address four maidens of three works (theater, novel and short story) by Elena Garro, to demonstrate what a wretched woman is in the twenties. The four girls are between twelve and fourteen years old, except Isabel, who is twenty; they are virgins: some belong to the rural class and others to a comfortable situation. To prove it, I have divided it into two phases, which reflect the reasons why women are miserable, as stated by Garro’s appointment and as reflected in the title of this article. Some, for physical rape and family and social dishonor (Úrsula and Antonia); and others for their unhappy and unrequited love (Severina and Isabel).
