La obra de Dickens y las representaciones de la ciudad industrial de Londres en el siglo XIX

Abstract

El artículo se centra en extraer de la obra literaria de Dickens información documental sobre la primera ciudad industrial: Londres. La fuente primaria de las novelas viene a complementar el estudio de los 180 grabados de Londres realizados por Gustave Doré en su obra London: A Pilgrimage en 1872. Londres crece frenéticamente, tanto en habitantes como en extensión. La ciudad policéntrica aparece, integrando redes, nodos y límites en su estructura. Miles de personas provenientes de la provincia cruzan a London Bridge para encontrar un mejor futuro en las fábricas. La contaminación industrial castiga la salud de la gente mientras que las condiciones laborales y calidad de vida son pésimas. La nobleza pierde su poder y emerge la nueva clase media liderando en la operación del nuevo orden industrial. Dickens identifica esos cambios estructurales y los representa en sus obras, interpretando el contexto en el cual se desenvuelve la ciudad de Londres.

The research focuses on extracting documentary information about the first industrial city from Dickens ‘literary work. The primary source of the novels complements Gustave Doré’s study of 180 London engravings in his London: A Pilgrimage in 1872. London grows frantically, both in inhabitants and in extension. The polycentric city appears, integrating networks, nodes and boundaries into its structure. Thousands of people from the province cross to London Bridge to find a better future in the factories. Industrial pollution punishes people’s health while working conditions and quality of life are appalling. The nobility loses its power and the new middle class emerges leading in the operation of the new industrial order. Dickens identifies these structural changes and represents them in his works, interpreting the context in which the city of London unfolds.
