La vorágine: historia y tiempo del paisaje latinoamericano

Abstract

En este artículo se revisa el centenario de la publicación en 1924 de la novela La vorágine del escritor colombiano José Eustasio Rivera (1888-1928). En ella a través de una historia la selva, nos adentra a un espacio geográfico para entender los mecanismos de explotación de la madera y el caucho, así como las formas caciquiles de gobierno y de trabajo que permean la extracción de la riqueza natural colombiana por los grandes capitales internacionales. En ella se muestran las diferencias palpables entre la civilización y la barbarie como antinomia principal en la que conviven las sociedades latinoamericanas como un fantasma insalvable heredado de la conquista de Europa sobre el nuevo mundo.

In this article it explore the centenary of the publication of 1924 the novel La vorágine of the Colombian writer José Eustasio Rivera (1888-1928). In this novel, through a love story, a runaway from the city and the arrival to the green prison –the jungle–, we enter a geographical space to understand the mechanisms of the wood and the extraction of the natural resources of Colombia by the big international powers. The novel shows the clear differences between the civilization and the barbarism as principal antinomy in which the Latin-American societies coexist as an insurmountable ghost inherited by the conquer of Europe over the new world.
