Tiempo, memoria, olvido

Abstract

Tenemos una imagen, a veces abstracta, a veces temible, siempre simbólica, de la permanencia, de la continuidad. La memoria y las expectativas —abiertas en un mundo dado—, el recuerdo y la esperanza —donde se fragua el heroísmo—, se enredan buscando comprender qué somos cuando somos tiempo. ¿Acaso somos sujetos de ficción, que se inventan a sí mismos en busca del sentido? En este ensayo reflexiono al respecto, primero buscando entender dos dimensiones existenciales de la temporalidad: el instante y la duración. Después, relacionando esta reflexión con la memoria y el olvido, que siempre se articulan narrativamente. Dialogamos con Gaston Bachelard, Henri Bergson, Marc Augé, Néstor Braunstein y Maurice Merleau-Ponty.

We have an image, sometimes abstract, sometimes fearful, always symbolic, of permanence, of continuity. Memory and expectations —open in a given world— remembrance and hope —where heroism is forged—, are entangled in our quest to understand what we are when we are time. Are we perhaps fictional subjects, inventing themselves in search of meaning? In this essay, I reflect on this, first seeking to understand two existential dimensions of temporality: the instant and the duration. Then, relating this reflection to memory and forgetting, which are always articulated narratively. We engage in dialogue with Gaston Bachelard, Henri Bergson, Marc Augé, Néstor Braunstein, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty.
