Frecuentemente, la población utiliza herbolaria para tratar problemas de salud, por lo que el propósito de este trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del extracto etanólico de Swietenia humilis sobre el desarrollo embrionario. Ratas hembra preñadas fueron inducidas a diabetes química el día 4 de gestación, o consideradas control, y durante la gestación se trataron con extracto etanólico de la planta o vehículo. A término, las ratas se sacrificaron y se obtuvieron los fetos, que se sometieron a análisis morfológico, y de algunos órganos, se realizó análisis histológico. En suero sanguíneo se determinó la concentración de colesterol, glucosa y triglicéridos. El extracto de S. humilis reduce el porcentaje y severidad de las malformaciones producidas por la diabetes inducida en ratas preñadas, así como los niveles de colesterol, glucosa y triglicéridos en suero sanguíneo materno.The coexistence of diabetes mellitus and pregnancy causes loss of pregnancy, developmental delay and malformations. Frequently, the population uses herbalism to treat several health problems; for this reason, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of ethanolic extract of Swietenia humilis over embryonic development. Pregnant female rats were induced to chemical diabetes on day 4 of gestation, or considered control; and along pregnancy they were treated with the ethanolic extract from the plant or vehicle. At term, the rats were sacrificed and fetuses were obtained, which were subject of morphological analysis, and in some organs, histological analysis was performed. In blood serum, the concentration of cholesterol, glucose and triglycerides was determined.
