Entre la geografía cuantitativa y la geografía rural. El andar de Silvana Levi Levi (de López) en el Instituto de Geografía UNAM

Abstract

En la presente investigación se expone la trayectoria de Silvana Levi Levi, también conocida como Silvana Levi de López, geógrafa que incursionó en los años setenta en el conocimiento y metodología de la Geografía Cuantitativa, que en el contexto anglófono se desarrolló en los años cincuenta y en México aún no se había manifestado de manera generalizada la incursión en esta propuesta, que como otros campos del conocimiento, llegaba de forma tardía al campo disciplinar en la geografía mexicana, no obstante el interés manifiesto de la doctora Levi en esta temática favoreció que se introdujera y abordara en el ámbito académico de la geografía mexicana en el último tercio del siglo XX. Las relaciones de intercambio que derivaron de estancias académicas realizadas por Silvana Levi en Gran Bretaña, favorecieron la realización de distintas actividades: cursos, seminarios, reuniones en el Instituto de Geografía y el Colegio de Geografía de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México que marcaron nuevas propuestas para la investigación con metodologías de la cartografía automatizada. Su incursión en el ámbito rural también se manifestó de manera activa al ser miembro de la directiva de la Comisión de Desarrollo Rural en la Unión Geográfica Internacional por varios años, que se complementó con proyectos de investigación en conjunto con la Universidad de Oxford. Lo referido en este trabajo es una breve exposición de la inquietud académica de una geógrafa comprometida con los requerimientos de su tiempo, que hoy en día son parte fundamental del quehacer geográfico.

This research presents the trajectory of Silvana Levi Levi, also known as Silvana Levi de López, a geographer who ventured into the knowledge and methodology of Quantitative Geography in the 1970s, that in the Englishspeaking context it was developed in the fifties and in Mexico the incursion into this proposal had not yet manifested itself in a generalized way, which like other fields of knowledge, arrived late to the disciplinary field in Mexican geography, despite the manifest interest of Dr. Levi in this subject favored its introduction and addressed in the academic field of Mexican geography in the last third of the twentieth century. The exchange relations that derived from academic stays made by Silvana Levi in Great Britain, favored the realization of different activities: courses, seminars, meetings at the Institute of Geography and the College of Geography of the National Autonomous University of Mexico that marked new proposals for research with automated mapping methodologies. Her foray into rural areas was also actively manifested by being a member of the board of the Rural Development Commission at the International Geographical Union for several years, which was complemented by joint research projects with the University of Oxford. What is referred to in this work is a brief exposition of the academic concern of a geographer committed to the requirements of her time, which today are a fundamental part of geographic work.
