- Educating the future generation of service innovators in emerging markets: A tale from the land of 100000 lakes(RESER (The European Association for REsearch on SERvices), 2016-09-08) Ferruzca-Navarro, Marco Vinicio; Tossavainen, Päivi J.; Kaartti, VirpiThis paper highlights the role of Higher Educations Institutions in educating the future generation of service innovators and their potential contribution to the service industry growth in emerging economies. In this study, first a global view of service innovation programs in HEIs shows the progress of service innovation education. Second, a single case of service innovation program in the land of 100,000 lakes is presented. This case serves as a trigger to consider how to embed service innovation education in emergent economies to strengthen their future innovation capabilities. The study suggests that educational transformations need to take place for this purpose. Download full proceedings http://reser-online.net/?p=108
- Social service fosters research-oriented learning(2016) Ferruzca-Navarro, Marco VinicioIn Mexico, social service is a mandatory activity performed by undergraduate students as a requisite for graduation. According to national regulations, the social service is managed by higher education institutions. Through social service (also understood as a service-learning experience), students can apply the knowledge they have acquired to produce a benefit to both society and the state. Social service should be oriented to solving relevant social problems about health, housing, social re-adaptation, immigration, technological development, education etcetera. For higher education institutions, this practice can be embedded in other academic activities like teaching, research and the preservation of culture. An example of a research project supported by social service activities is presented by the author in order to reflect how this particular service learning experience can foster research-oriented learning. More efforts to analyse this possible relationship are needed. This material will be interesting for people studying different ways to approach this particular mode of learning. - A comparative study of service design PROGRAMS in higher education(IATED Library, 2016-03-07) Ferruzca-Navarro, Marco Vinicio; Tossavainen, Päivi J.; Kaartti, Virpi; Santonen, TeemuService design has gained increasingly attention during the last years. It has been approached from the design, business, engineering and the computer science perspectives. Furthermore, service design has grown considerable as an economic activity. Through, conferences, new journals, and magazines about service design, the topic can be easily found. Albeit it is not fully defined, it has becoming an interesting area to explore. At the same time, service design programs have emerged into higher education, oriented to prepare future professionals with new competences. This includes skills to be capable to guide innovation by fostering the co-creation of value with users and to design the best experiences with customers alongside with generating a good return on their investment. If we take it for granted that service design faces challenges in moving forward as a discipline, we need to consider the contextual, social or technological perspective to understand it. The purpose of the paper is to explore how well the service design is embedded in the higher education. Covering Top 50 universities, in which 13 meet our selection criteria, offer 30 service design programs which have been explored to provide an international comparative study based on the type of the program and its curriculum content. The higher education focus is reflected, because we consider that those educated in service design are in future important actors to foster innovation in both private and public organizations.
