  • Multiple embedded strong discontinuities in closed-form beam-column elements to model inelastic behavior of structures
(Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (México). Unidad Azcapotzalco., 2024-04) Martínez Miranda, Ángel Uriel
The development of novel closed-form beam-column elements with multiple embedded strong discontinuities for failure analysis is addressed in this work. Inelastic material behavior for solid continua and structures, which physically appears as fissures, fractures, shear lines, or other cases, is modeled by the strong discontinuity approach. With this model, the kinematics of the displacement field is enhanced by a discontinuous function associated to a displacement jump (strong discontinuity), which characterizes failure on the macroscopic scale. A localized singularity strain field results from the discontinuous displacement field, which is treated in the mathematical formulation by the Dirac delta function. Multiple embedded strong discontinuities are considered to model several dissipative mechanisms due to high strain localization failures at arbitrary positions in solid continua or structures. These localized failures are captured across a surface associated with a narrow zone in which nonlinear behavior is smeared. Hence, the capability of the formulated elements is reasonably similar to that of finite elements based on distributed plasticity or fine finite element meshes. Moreover, the finite element method and Gauss integration schemes are no used in the developed elements since they are derived from closed-form solutions. Softening behavior, such as fracture or damage, and hardening elastoplastic behavior, such as plasticity, among other cases, are treated with the formulated elements.
