El objetivo de la presente investigación es demostrar, desde la perspectiva institucional, que la economía informal es una forma de comportamiento de los agentes económicos que al trasgredir las instituciones formales que rigen la actividad económica productiva y/o improductiva de una sociedad puede existir en cualquier sector de la economía, y no sólo en un sector específico, en cualquier nivel de desarrollo económico, en las empresas de cualquier tamaño y en los trabajadores desde cualquier tipo de ocupación que desarrollen. Para ello, la presente tesis se centra en dos cuestiones. La primera es de carácter teórico-metodológico que presenta la forma en la que el pensamiento económico ha concebido a la economía informal y la manera en que los organismos internacionales la han estimado en los recientes años. La segunda es el estudio de la economía informal mexicana durante los primeros quince años del presente siglo.
