Supercities.
This paper on SuperCities and on the Intelligence of the Territory aims to contribute to the collective effort to design the cities of the future. Cities have a growing importance in our society and are developing in a complex context, with obvious challenges, but with a range of opportunities that did not exist previously. In the concepts of SuperCities and Territory Intelligence, we collect, from a current perspective, the most relevant ideas and the main “urban movements” that are being key to the construction of our cities. From the Athens Charter that inspired the reconstruction of Europe after the Second World War and that continues to inspire projects today, to the “Strategic Plans” of cities and other approaches such as the “Participation Urbanism”, the “Region City”, the New Towns, the
“Eco-urbanism”, the “Digital City”, the Smart Cities movement, etc. We also present some of the most innovative projects that are being developed today on the international scene and that can inspire the design of the cities of the future: One North in Singapore, the “Guggenheim effect” and the Hearts of Barrio in Bilbao, the High Line in New York, the social urbanism of Medellín, Barcelona 22@, Minato Mirai 21 from Yokoyama, Copenhagen Green Capital, the “miracle” of Suzhou, the ecotechnological utopia of Masdar in Abu Dhabi, the Digital
Creative City of Guadalajara, the Activity Hubs of Sydney, the Microrayons of Moscow or the Caribbean Diamond and Santanderes of Colombia. Finally, the proposal of “Smart Territories” presented to contribute to reflection and inspire the design and construction of the habitat of the future, one of the great challenges.
