The effect of the acidity that present the typical fractions (IBP-177, 177-274, 274-340 y ˃340°C) of crude oils from México was studied. Thus, the total acid number (TAN) was determined according with ASTM D664. The results show an increase in the acidity when the API gravity decrease, and this trend is almost lineal. However, this function can´t be extended for the distillated fractions since the cut from 274-340 °C (gasoil) reaches a higher acidity in comparison with other fractions, including the atmospheric residue (˃340 °C), which indicate that the acid compounds have a higher affinity for the atmospheric gasoil.
