Based-copper hydrotalcites were used as Fenton-type reagents in the catalytic wet oxidation with hydrogen peroxide, using the degradation of phenol as a model reaction. The catalytic results show that when using a different metal in combination with Cu (i.e. Ni or Co) during the synthesis of the catalyst, it appears a synergetic effect of the various metals constituting the quaternary hydrotalcites systems, Cu-Ni-Mg-Al-CO₃(OH) or Cu-Co-Mg-Al-CO₃(OH), which has a remarkable effect in the catalytic activity of the resulting salid. The formulation of the hydrotalcite-based catalyst containing Cu-Co-Mg-Al allows to attain a 72% conversion of phenol at 30 minutes of reaction under the operational conditions stablished. Although the hydrotalcites containing Cu-Ni-Mg-Al were effective in the oxidation reaction, they led to 53% conversion of phenol. Only when using basedcopper hydrotalcite and hydrogen peroxide in combination, the Fenton-like reagent role is evidenced in the phenol degradation, which is the main subject ofthis work.
