The production and constitution of essential oils in fruits is affected by biotic and abiotic factors, which causes different effects on their functions, such as the inhibitory effect on bacteria. The present work evaluated the inhibitory effect of the pericarp of Citrus sinensis grown in a warm and humid area on Streptococcus mutans and Sthaphylococcus epidermidis. The essential oils of C. sinensis produced in Veracruz were obtained by hydrodestilation and the inhibitory effect was evaluated by microdilution in broth. The results showed that at 450 μg / mL of essential oils they inhibited the growth of S. mutans, similar to commercial D-limonene. A bacteriostatic effect of D-limonene, was observed on Staphylococcus epidermidis.
