Composites comprising both titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and hydrotalcite-type (HT) compounds were obtained from their mechanical mixture (by varying their weight ratio). TiO₂ was synthesized by sol-gel, while a series of HT containing Ni, Zn and Al in their structure (at different mass fraction) were prepared by co-precipitation. The composites TiO₂-HT were evaluated as catalysts in the photo-degradation of Orange II aqueous solution. The photocatalytic activity of pure TiO₂ was too low under the parameters of reaction established. A commercial TiO₂ was tested for comparison and yielded 60% of conversion at two hours of reaction. Both semiconductors enhanced their activity within the composites, showing the best photocatalytic activity (96%) the composite including TiO₂ synthesized in our labs and the HT with molar ratio Ni/Zn/Al=1. It is evidenced the adsorptive capacity of HT, which contributes in the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity of TiO₂ in the abatement of dyes present in water.
